Online Journal Clubs
Currently (2026), I organize two online journal clubs / reading groups, on quite different topics. They are on zoom, so not restricted to a particular institution.
Journal club on Many-Body Open Quantum Systems:
Mainly papers on Lindblad many-body systems.
Mondays 10:30am - noon CET. The timing is suitable for people located
in Europe and Asia. (In summer, this means 2pm India, 4:30pm China.)
Some more details are here.
Journal club on Machine Learning Theory:
The participants include both physicists in academia and (ex-)physicists in industry. So there is some bias toward
physics-y articles, but the focus is really machine learning theory (not physics).
Tuesdays 20:00 - 21:30 CET (7pm-8:30pm Ireland/UK). The timing is suitable for people located in
Europe and America. (2pm Boston, 11am California.)
Some more details are here.
If you are interested in participating in one of these, please contact me via email, introducing yourself briefly if we don't know each other.
Research Area
Condensed Matter Theory / Statistical Physics / Non-Equilibrium Physics / Dynamical Systems
Prominent research themes, present and past:
Most of my papers are available as
Most are on `cond-mat', except for a couple of exceptions, e.g., a q-bio and a cs.LG preprint. Regrettably, there are now too many 'M.Haque's authoring preprints on arXiV, so identifying my papers is not as easy as it once was.
Also, most publications can be seen on my google scholar page.
Employment trajectory
In summer 2021 I moved back to Dresden, to start work at the Technische Universitaet Dresden.
Until summer 2021, I was a faculty member at Maynooth University, in
Ireland, in the greater Dublin area.
When I joined in 2016, the Department was called the Department of
Mathematical Physics, later renamed to the Department of Theoretical
Physics. After I left, it merged into a
larger Department
of Physics.
From late 2006 to early 2016, I was a research scientist at the Max-Planck Institute for the Physics
of Complex Systems
(MPI-PKS) in Dresden, Germany.
I was associated with the Condensed Matter Department within MPI-PKS.
For part of my time at MPI-PKS Dresden, I held a ``Distinguished PKS postdoctoral fellow'' position;
one of three such positions at the MPI-PKS.
Later, as a longer-term Staff Scientist I directed a team of researchers (of
varying sizes at various times), mostly focusing on the physics of
quantum systems out of equilibrium.
My first postdoctoral appointment (Nov 2003 -- Sep 2006) was in Utrecht university, the Netherlands, working with Henk Stoof's group, at the Institute for Theoretical Physics,
I did my Ph.D. at the Physics Department in Rutgers University, New Jersey. I was at Rutgers from Fall 1997 till September 2003. I worked with the Rutgers quantum condensed matter theory group. My PhD advisor was Andrei E Ruckenstein.
I used to teach four courses per year in Maynooth. Below are snapshots of my last two semesters of teaching there, in case anyone finds them useful.
Spring: Electricity & Magnetism and Special Relativity
Autumn: Intro to Quantum Mechanics and Computational Physics II
Research group in Maynooth:
Before that, in MPI-PKS Dresden, I directed a research team (2012 -- 2015) working on non-equilibrium phenomena in quantum systems. Members at various times:
The material below is prehistoric and is kept on for nostalgic purposes; probably of interest to nobody but me.

Brief descriptions of selected research topics. Written around 2012/2013. This is obviously outdated but kept here for nostalgic reasons. |
